At BookExpo America in New York, on May 30, 2013, Carmen Tafolla’s bilingual collection of poetry, Rebozos, published by Wings Press, won the International Latino Book Award in three different categories: Best Book of Bilingual Poetry, Best Art Book, and Best Gift Book. The large format, full-color hardback book is illustrated with paintings by California artist Catalina Gárate García.
Rebozos explores the nature of its namesake, the Mexican woman’s rebozo, a rectangular shawl-like garment. The dynamic between Tafolla’s words and Gárate García’s paintings is at the heart of the book’s nuance, and illustrates the breadth of the rebozo as an icon embued with distinct cultural gravitas. Truly, Rebozos is a work of women which examines, most intimately, the work of women.
The International Latino Book Awards are amongst the most prestigious awards acknowledging accomplishments in Latino Literature. The awards were presented by Latino Literacy Now in partnership with Las Comadres para las Americas and the Instituto Cervantes.
